World War II Veterans

from

Wayne County, Indiana

* * * * * * * * * * * *

This website recognizes and honors all who served, both living and dead, in World War II.
It also honors all others who served or are now serving in the military, for the vital work
necessary in times of peace or conflict to preserve the freedom we enjoy in this country.

The totals for Veterans listed in the introduction and for Jackson and Wayne Townships
likely are off by less than twenty. Those for the other townships are correct.
By township, the first number after the title is the total from that township.
The second number is the township Killed in Action (KIA). We believe that number is accurate.

NOTE: The branch of service is shown by each name if known.
FYI, the U S Army Air Corps name was changed to the U S Army Air Forces before December 7, 1941.
Therefore, no one is listed as serving in "the Air Corps."

These are lists of two thousand, three hundred, thirty-three
citizens from Wayne County, Indiana who served in the
United States Armed Forces and Merchant Marine during World War II.
One hundred seventy were killed or died in action or line of duty (KIA).
At least one other died of wounds (DOW) shortly after the war ended.
There are several areas of the county that have few or no names listed.
We hope those who know of names not listed will let us know
so their stories can be told.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Those named are men and women from Wayne County, Indiana who were
members of the United States Armed Forces or Merchant Marine between December 7, 1941 and December 31, 1946.
Thanks to the many of you who have put messages in the Guest Book or sent emails with names and
information about friends and loved ones. The recent revisions do not permit retaining the previous
Guest Book messages for review online. They were saved offline as permanent reference.
Jackson Township has 385 names from around Cambridge City. This list was furnished by
Phyllis Mattheis of Cambridge City, Indiana. These names were on the Memorial Plaque in Cambridge City for
many years. Most of the Wayne Township and Richmond names are from the Memorial Plaque at the entrance to
Richmond High School. It was placed there in 1943 and updated in 1998 by Cliff Davis, David J Hoff and the
members of the RHS Breakfast Club. Cliff Davis sent a copy of the list of names on the refurbished plaque.
Names were added to the plaque at that time to have over 1400 names. More than two hundred names
have been supplied by friends and relatives and added to this list in the past two years.
Myron Brown, of Huntington, Indiana, provided a copy of a Palladium-Item article of August 15, 1945
which listed 158 who lost their lives in the war. Interesting that 158 was the first number drawn in the
National Selective Service Draft Lottery in 1940. We believe there were a few more fatalities besides those listed.
There must be several hundred not on the lists which should be. We hope someone will
give us those names so they can be recognized with the others.
If you have additional information about the military service for anyone on the list,
please sign the Guest Book and enter that information so it can be added by their name.
If you know of names not on the list which should be, please tell us.
Morrisson-Reeves Library in Richmond, Indiana receives copies
of this Wayne County Veterans' List on compact disk (CD)as a permanent record.
We intend to furnish Morrison-Reeves Library an up-to-date copy on CD
annually as long as this website is active and names are added.
As you may know, a website remains active only so long as the server
is paid for the use of the domain. We feel that the Morrison-Reeves Library
constitutes a permanent repository for this information, that the information is
important enough that it should be protected and that doing so will assure that it
will be available far into the future, long after this website ceases to be active.
    Just received this message from Mark Salzarulo in California. It is so interesting
    and appropriate that it is here for all to read.
    Family & Friends,
    Recently, I received a letter from Mary Griffey of RHS Alumni Association announcing
    an all-class reunion in August, 2006, in Richmond. And at that event, the high school
    would present diplomas to men who were called to active duty during WWII before their
    graduation. I fell into that category. If I could not attend to receive my diploma,
    she asked if I would share a memorable story of those days. So I wrote a one-page essay
    (hadn't done that since high school) and titled it, "Stars in Mom's Window", and sent it off.
    Those of you who have a copy of the family "Remember When" albums, I thought this would be
    another memorabilia to add to it.
    STARS IN MOM’S WINDOW
    By Mark Salzarulo
    Oceanside, Calif.
    My family consisted of six boys and two girls. All six of us boys served in the military, overseas during WWII,
    and both sisters worked in defense plants there in Richmond, Ind. I was the youngest. My older brothers, one-by-one
    entered the service, two before the start of the war and the others after the start of the war. All five were officers.
    Whenever they came home on leave, we used to take turns walking next to them down Main Street—like,
    “This is my brother in uniform”!
    Early on, near the start of the war, an American custom began which was to hang a little red, white and blue banner
    consisting of a star in the middle (blue for "active duty", gold for "killed-in-action") in the front window of
    the serviceman's home which signified a member of that home was serving our country in the military.
    Well, as the boys enlisted, one-by-one, our mother had to purchase a (new) banner with the appropriate number of stars on it.
    By the time I left for active duty as an enlisted man (a private) on May 3, 1944, there was one banner hanging in
    the window which had five stars arranged like the dots on dice, the center star being gold since my brother, Raymond,
    was killed in the Battle of Midway. Well, Mom couldn't find a banner with six stars, so she simply hung her very first
    (single-star) banner under the one with five. Have you got the picture??
    Some months later I was granted an emergency leave because my brother, Bob, was shot down over Germany and
    reported Missing in Action (later, he was found to be a POW of the Germans). When I walked up onto the porch there
    on North 15th Street, I glanced at the window and saw the two banners. I was reminded of the military regulation
    forbidding officers and enlisted men from fraternizing. So, I remember commenting to the folks—in jest,
    of course—something to the effect that, since the star representing me, a private, hung separate and below
    the other five (officers) above, then Army regulations stretched all the way home as well.
    We all got a good laugh about it and it has made a good story in the years since. I think you'll enjoy it.
    Mark
    ps; if you have a thought or comment, I'd be happy to receive it.
    Special thanks to Cliff Davis of New Paris, Ohio for the list of about 1400 names of Veterans from the Memorial Plaques at the entrance of Richmond High School.
    Special thanks to Phyllis Mattheis of Cambridge City, Indiana for the list of 380 World War II
    service personnel from Jackson Township.
    Special thanks to Myron W Brown of Huntington, Indiana for the Palladium-Item article copy
    which lists 158 service personnel from Wayne County who died in World War II.
    The information in these lists has come from many sources. Some are from print articles from
    the Palladium-Item, Richmond, Indiana newspaper. The major portion of the Wayne Township list
    is from the names listed on the World War II Memorial Plaques in the entrance to Richmond High School.
    Almost all of the names for Jackson Township were on a memorial plaque displayed for many years in
    Cambridge City. We understand it no longer is there.
    About two hundred names in the lists have been requested by individuals. We have entered the information
    as it was conveyed to us. We have no way to confirm the accuracy of the information, but used reasonable care
    to assure it was entered as received. It was evident that some information supplied by family members
    was not accurate as they were not familiar with unit designations, military equipment, terminology
    or activities. We attempted in a few cases to use our military experience and knowledge to increase the
    accuracy without changing the value of the information materially.
    Occasionally, the branch of service was added where none had been stated based on our knowledge of
    the military units active in that area. For example, there were few if any United State Marine Corps
    units involved in the European conflict. The Marine units were very active in the South Pacific.
    Therefore, there are a few cases where a man's branch is shown as U S Marine Corps where it should
    U S Army or vice versa. Our intent was to provide as much information as possible. Please notify us
    if you know of errors like this or any others.
    Our intent is to recognize the honorable activities of all who served in the military services in World War II.
    Unfortunately, there is a vast number who have no information other than their name listed. There likely
    are several hundred others from Wayne County who served, but whose names are not even on the lists.
